Revolutionary solution for grinding of bearing rings – watch the video

RON centric3933w

CNC Machine tool Manufacturer RIFA plans to adapt the RON-Centric technology from TECHNOMACH Roundness Technologies for producing the grinding machines of the latest generation for medium and large size rings – with diameters over 100mm.

The project was set-up in collaboration with Newland Machine Tools Group

More information about this revolutionary technology for grinding can be found in the article: RON-Centric, The most effective grinding technology for bearing industry

RON centric3933w

The RON-Centric technology is a unique revolution for the grinding machines of the latest generation for medium and large size rings – with diameters over 100mm. The standard supporting shoes are replaced by a monolithic high accuracy multi-point support. Parameters of this support are computed according to special mathematical methods, which eliminate all disadvantages of traditional grinding, while keeping all its advantages. This technology is not sensitive to the accuracy of the initial set up, deviations of parameters of rings, smoothes out majority of instabilities of a machine tool, does not require skilled personnel and does not need periodical process adjustments. RON-Centric technology provides much higher geometrical accuracy and increases the productivity in the same time.

You can watch the test results of this new technology in the video below. Chinese visitors can click here to watch the movie on Youku.com

An overview of Cylindrical Grinding Technologies for the production of Bearing rings

  • Historically the first generation of OD grinding machines were based on grinding with jaw, membrane or other types of chucks. The main problem of this technology is the low geometrical accuracy level (roundness). The main problems of this technology are the spindle run-outs, oscillation, deformation of the rings in the chucks and thermal stress created during grinding process etc. Rings set ups requires a lot of time and increases the working hours and the cost price during the production process.
  • Through centerless grinding process was developed as the next stage/generation. The main disadvantage of this process is its very limited flexibility. Re-setting centerless grinding machines for different ring types is an extremely labour intensive and time consuming process. That is why this technology is used primarily for mass production. Another problem of this process is that it does not work for some ring types, such as non-symmetrical profile rings, narrow reference surfaces like inner rings of radial- thrust bearings, taper roller bearings and spherical roller bearings.
  • The most accepted and the most progressive OD grinding technology today is grinding on shoes with magnetic chucks – ‘shoetype centerless’ or ‘microcentric’ grinding. This new technology is providing more flexibility, high productivity and sufficient accuracy during the grinding process. The work piece setting and loading is very simple and efficient. The main problem of this technology is its high sensitivity to various factors like deviation from original roundness or diameters of the rings, wear on the shoes, setup errors and unstable feeding etc. These factors lead to an immediate loss of final geometrical accuracy.  The microcentric technology demands high skilled personnel to set up production and to adjust it periodically. Another problem is the impossibility of accurate grinding of slim thin walled rings, due to deformation by grinding forces.
